Five anti-trafficking activists were subjected to mass rape at gunpoint in eastern India after participating in a theater show that forced activists to ride a car and were raped in an isolated area.
Police told the BBC that they were investigating the incident but had not arrested any suspects so far.
Activists were involved in a campaign to combat trafficking in human beings in cooperation with a non-governmental organization.
"The women's representation team ended the theater show on the street and went to a school, but a number of armed men stormed the school, kidnapped five girls and took them into the forest and then raped them," an Indian police official said.
He confirmed that the police assigned three task forces to participate in investigations and interrogations, and that the five girls were under police protection until the result of the medical examination.
Statistics have recorded about 40,000 rape cases in India in 2016, and there are reports that there are many cases of rape not reported for fear of "scandal".
The practice of sexual violence in India was highlighted after a girl was raped on a school bus and killed in 2012.
